Prom season is an exciting time of year for many high school students. For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer, or Questioning (LGBTQ) youth it’s no different. But for those that are queer or questioning and would like to take a date of their choice it can be a time of high stress. This is due to many not feeling accepted by their local high school community.
LGBTQ youth in Seattle, Washington and the greater Seattle area can feel rest assured that they have their own prom. A prom where they can bring the date of their choice and be who they are without judgement or feeling like a minority. Seattle, Washington's prom for LGBTQ youth ages 11-22 has been going strong for more than sixteen years.
The dance mimics local high school sponsored proms with corsages, formal dress, prom pictures, and chaperones.
* This project was approached and completed with the understanding that many of the youth who are under eighteen have not told their family members about their sexuality.
